There are three major reasons why health clubs now have the opportunity to support and enhance the healthcare system. First, the healthcare continuum has expanded to include preventive and health promotion services that aim to limit the cost burden (see Figure 1).

The demand from consumers, insurers and corporaons has become so great that either health clubs will respond and take advantage of this opportunity, or healthcare providers will do it themselves. It is in the best interest of health clubs to offer these services in affiliation with healthcare providers. Second, health clubs are a market-driven business, responsive to the changing desire among consumers to maximize their health.

Third, over the past decade, health clubs have matured from gyms that only attract “jocks,” to fitness centers that attract individuals who want more control over their lives through fitness, to health clubs, where deconditioned individuals go for professional expertise to help them progress from one fitness level to the next.

To take advantage of the healthcare opportunity, health club owners must accept their role by expanding programs, communicating their availabilities to consumers, and creating liaisons with healthcare providers.

To better understand how the health club industry can enhance the healthcare system, it is important to understand the recent changes that have occurred in the healthcare system.

An article in the Feb. 26 issue of the medical journal The Lancet succinctly and accurately summarizes our knowledge about the preventable causes of heart disease, the nation’s No. 1 cause of death.

“From the 1950′s onward, epidemiological studies … identified personal characteristics as risk factors for the development of premature CHD [coronary heart disease] in previously health people. Of these modifiable factors,” The Lancet reports, “cigarette smoking, blood pressure and total blood cholesterol were most consistently and powerfully implicated.”

The bottom line is that cigarette smoking, elevated blood pressure and high serum cholesterol are the “big three” of heart disease causes. Yet despite the medical community’s knowledge of these factors, the message is still not getting out with proper emphasis in the popular media.

For example, the Feb. 21 issue of Newsweek published an American Heart Association sponsored advertorial on heart health. Both the group’s current president, Dr. Lynn Smaha, and President Elect Dr. Rose Marie Robertson, contribute commentaries to the magazine supplement titled, “A Heart Health Update.”

In his introduction, Smaha wrote about risk factors for heart disease, citing “high blood pressure and cholesterol levels,” but did not once mention cigarette smoking. When addressing “lifestyle factors” that affect heart disease risk, he refers to only two: living with an ill spouse, an alleged risk factor; and owning a pet, a purported protective factor.

In her commentary, Robertson’s first reference to heart disease risk factors omits cigarette smoking despite its significant role in causing heart disease. When she does mention smoking a few paragraphs later, it is only in passing and is given inappropriately low priority on the list of ways to reduce one’s risk of heart attack and stroke.

When asked to comment on the lack of attention given to smoking as a preventable cause of heart disease, both AHA doctors stressed that smoking is a key factor in causation, but said the intent of their articles was to focus on research strategies for treating disease. Unfortunately, general readers could not be aware of the authors’ intent, and the important message that smoking is one of the three major causes of heart disease is lost.

The American public has long relied upon the AHA for information about the causes of heart disease. But the message that young people will take home by reading the AHA’s Newsweek advertorial will not give them the guidance they need to resist the urge and pressure to smoke, nor will it help adults seeking information on ways to lower their heart disease risk.

If the AHA leadership cannot do a better job of alerting the public to the real risks of smoking, who can?

An internet drugstore may present you easy, private method to order prescription, over-the-counter remedies, frequently at a more affordable rate. Online pharmacy no prescription are especially suitable if you do not drive.

While attempts to bring urinary incontinence out of the closet are gaining momentum, its embarrassing twin — bowel incontinence — remains secretly hidden in the dark recesses of that same closet.

“Bowel incontinence is much more debilitating, much more devastating because you can’t just wear a pad and go out in public. It is so stigmatized because of the odor issue that it greatly affects one’s social life,” explained Dorothy B. Doughty, president of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) based in California.

“It’s humiliating, never talked about, people make fun and that’s very painful. People become shut-ins, never wanting to leave their homes. It’s so embarrassing that it’s difficult to track numbers because so many people never want to even discuss it.”

WOCN estimates that 2 to 7 percent of the population suffer from it.

Bowel incontinence has various causes, including spinal cord injuries, neurologic problems, spina bifida and severe dementia. Damage to the nerves that control the anal sphincter is a leading cause. In women, childbirth can also result in continence problems.

“Sometimes vaginal deliveries can cause tears in the rectum,” said Doughty, a registered nurse and nurse practitioner. “But if you ask someone if they have bowel incontinence, they often times will say no, they have diarrhea. But they are not the same thing.”

According to Doughty, there is a difference between diarrhea, which is characterized by a liquid stool that is difficult to control, and would fall under the category of a bowel disorder. With bowel incontinence, the stool is normal and control is highly difficult.

The good news is there is help in most cases. Many continence centers across the country have expanded their regimens to include bowel incontinence programs, which depending on the case, can offer help in developing control. Gastroenterologists offer diagnosis and protocol for management, including medication and possibly surgery.

As for children, Doughty cautions parents to watch for signs of encopresis — a problem where children hold their bowel movements. This can cause extreme blockage that can stretch out the rectum, resulting in small amounts of liquid feces to leak out, resembling diarrhea. “The problem is really one of severe constipation, and while it is natural for some children to go through a stage of controlling their bowel movements, repeat occurrences can cause damage to sensory awareness in the rectum,” she said. Help should be sought from a pediatric gastroenterologist or continence center.

Buying cheap drugs without a prescription is secure, safe and easy at this reliable online pharmacy. You can economize a lot of energy, money and time.

Like other trace minerals, the body requires selenium in very low doses, probably less than 100 mcg/day. It is found in foods such as wheat germ, Brazil nuts, oats, whole wheat, brown rice, orange juice, and garlic in direct proportion to the level of selenium in the soil in which the plants were grown.

Overt selenium deficiency has been primarily observed in some parts of China, where selenium soil levels are extremely low.

Symptoms include heart disorders, joint damage, muscle weakness, and an increased incidence of liver cancer. The incidence of cancer also appears to be abnormally high in areas of low soil selenium.

Needs for selenium appear to increase during pregnancy, and infants given formula alone can become selenium deficient [Fan et al., 1990; Karunanithy et al., 1989].

When you arrive at the emergency department a nurse or physician will ask some questions about the symptoms that you are experiencing. A physical exam will be performed. You will be placed on a heart monitor so that your heart rhythm can be continuously observed. Frequently during a heart attack the heart’s electrical system is interrupted, and this can result in serious heart rhythm disturbances.

An intravenous catheter will be inserted into your arm. This provides access for the administration of fluids and medications. You may be given supplemental oxygen through the nose or mouth. This is necessary during a heart attack to deliver needed oxygen to the body.

A series of tests will be performed to help the physician in making the diagnosis of a heart attack (myocardial infarction). An electrocardiogram (EKG) can determine if the heart is being deprived of oxygen and if your are truly having a heart attack. At times the EKG appears normal even when a heart attack is occurring. Changes on the EKG may not be apparent for several days. For this reason, the physician may recommend admission to the hospital for continued observation.

Blood tests can provide important information about heart muscle damage during a heart attack. When heart muscle dies, an enzyme called creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) is released into the blood stream. A special form of CPK, which is found only in heart tissue, can be measured. Another chemical, which is becoming more widely used to diagnosis a heart attack is troponin T, also found only in cardiac muscle cells. These blood tests will usually be repeated every 8 hours for the first day or two following a heart attack. They provide useful information about the degree of damage and when the heart attack may have first occurred.

Nowadays there exist many reasons that are constantly causing organisms toxicity. Kinoki foot pads are one of the easiest, safest, most effective detoxification procedure.

Most males and some females fear that they will suffer from hair loss. But hair loss is not a hopeless problem, since treatment methods exist. I will tell you about some of your options.

There are several hair loss remedies that we all know about. Rogaine is one of these remedies, and it may be able to restore hair growth. To be successful, however, this treatment should be initiated at the onset of hair loss. That means you have to begin applying Rogaine as close as possible to the onset of hair loss. You can save money, however, if you purchase a generic form or keep an eye out for sales and other promotions. It is, however, likely to be in the range of $15 – $80.

Propecia tablets are an alternative approach and are available with a prescription from your physician. Here too, you will be likely to have maximum success if treatment is instituted as early as possible. In the case of complete baldness, Propecia no prescription will probably not be of any help to you. If you follow the directions on the package, the manufacturer of Propecia guarantees success. The manufacturer will refund your purchase price if you keep going bald despite using Propecia properly for 12 months or more.

Prices on the internet fall in the range of $150 – $450. What you have to pay will also depend upon the terms of your medical insurance policy.

How well do you eat? The falling out of hair has also been attributed to an excess consumption of so-called “red” meat. Therefore, you might cut your risk of hair loss if you eliminate it from your diet or at least reduce your intake of it. Although there is no proof of this, it seems as though people who live in Asia have more hair than those who live in the West, and Asians generally consume little red meat.

Do you know what a eunuch is? You probably have if you have ever seen the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Simply put, a eunuch is a man whose testicles have been removed. Since their bodies do not produce the testosterone that leads to baldness, eunuchs rarely lose their hair. While castration has the advantage of preventing hair loss, it is hardly to be recommended as a desirable treatment option.

In summary, whether you are a man or a woman, losing your hair can be disconcerting and depressing. But don’t feel doomed, because you have options. Your options are either to resign yourself to hair loss or to take action against it. You have the choice.

Consider the not-too-distant past. At the turn of the century, the medical marketplace was packed with snake-oil salesmen. They bottled colored water and called it the sovereign remedy for every disease known to humans.

Everything new became a cure-all. Radio was a recent discovery–well, then, radio waves could cure rheumatism! Tibet was exotic. Therefore, many concoctions pretended to derive their origin from that far-off country.

Into this cornucopia of unscrupulous commercial activity, medical doctors advanced like early Ralph Naders. They fought against fake remedies, demanded accountability, and held aloft the flag of rigorous research.

When present-day medical boards investigate alternative practitioners, they mean to continue in that noble tradition. All unconventional cancer treatments look like snake oil to them. They want to protect people from being duped. Their intentions are good.

But many patients wish the government would just get out of their way and allow them to obtain the treatments they prefer.

The dynamic tension must be maintained between significant but opposing values in order to find a balance between protecting people from health care fraud and allowing them freedom of choice.

World Leader in Technology for an Ageing Population, Doctor, will speak in Adelaide 23-28 October, sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

Doctor, Vice President of Research at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (Toronto Rehab) and an internationally respected developer of practical products for the elderly and persons with disabilities, will be a keynote speaker at the Australian Biomedical Engineering Conference in Adelaide from 23-27 October. Dr. Fernie’s presentations will highlight the theme of the conference which focuses on Ageing – People, Practice and Technology.

Doctor and his team recently received approval to develop iDAPT (Intelligent Design for Adaptation and Technology), one of the most advanced rehabilitation research facilities in the world where new diagnostic methods, therapeutic interventions and assistive technologies will be developed for seniors and people recovering from and living with disabling injury or illness. The CA$36 million iDAPT facilities will be built at Toronto Rehab, Canada’s largest academic hospital specializing in adult rehabilitation, complex continuing care and long-term care, in collaboration with the University of Toronto and other, private sector partners.

The main feature of iDAPT, the Challenging Environmental Assessment Laboratory (CEAL), will house a one-of-a-kind motion simulator that can mimic different environmental conditions – such as ice covered surfaces, and uneven terrain including slopes and bumps – that the elderly and people with disabilities encounter every day. This will enable researchers to study the challenges these people experience first-hand, and to develop innovative and practical solutions to help these populations overcome these barriers and participate more fully in society.

“We are delighted to have Geoff come to Australia, as Canada has an enviable track record in good research, but also practical solutions, that assist people with disabilities and all of us as we age,” said Dr Lloyd Walker, Co-Scientific Chair of the ABEC2005 Conference and Director of NovitaTech (a division of Novita Children’s Services) in Adelaide. “While centres such as NovitaTech have been both researching and delivering novel technologies to Australians with disabilities for some time, we have nothing on the scale of the work being undertaken in Toronto. We are now working closely with the Canadian teams to build our capacity in this area.”

When fully operational in 2010, iDAPT will be an international rehabilitation research facility where:
over 250 scientists will use the most advanced technology and equipment, including a CA$7 million motion simulator, computer-aided design and three-dimensional prototyping, to safely study the complex interactions between people and their environments to generate new knowledge and understanding about the aging process and the effects of disability;
multidisciplinary teams of investigators will rapidly translate that knowledge and understanding into new, more effective diagnostic methodologies, innovative treatment interventions and marketable user-friendly assistive devices to enhance the lives of the elderly and people with disabilities;

the next generation of rehabilitation researchers, clinicians and assistive technology designers will engage in the critical education they need to enhance the lives of people living with disabilities and support the world’s ageing population.

Doctor is a remarkable biomedical engineer, with over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters to his credit as well as 16 families of patents. His work is pragmatic: one of his favourite developments is a simple handrail that permits a person who is unsteady on his feet to “hug” the rail and avoid the risk of a fall.

Doctor will be presenting a public lecture titled “Developing Technology that meets the Ageing Population’s Needs” at Novita Children’s Services Theatre on Thursday 27th October at 7pm. He will also be visiting Canberra and Brisbane during his trip to Australia.

I’m 50 years old and exercise too little. How do I make time (between my job, family and a long commute) to work out? What are the best exercises for me to do, given limited time and my age? I’m not in terrible shape.

Answer:

I understand about the busy lifestyle, but you need to make a commitment to yourself about getting healthy. Be willing to put at least 20 minutes a day of exercise. Early morning workouts can be great for getting your day off to the right start. And, it can make your long commute easier to tolerate. Maybe on your lunch hour, you could fit in a 20-minute walk prior to eating a healthy meal. On the weekends, get the family together to do an outdoor activity like tennis, cycling or playing a game of kickball, football or soccer.

The best thing to do individually is to increase your activity. Start with walking, then add activities later on. This will help increase your energy level as well as help expend calories.

For muscle toning, during your long commute you can perform isometric exercises. Isometric exercise involves contracting your muscles and holding for five to 10 seconds.

Exercises like calf raises, leg squeezes, steering wheel squeezes, shoulder shrugs, abdomen tightening, fanny squeezes, pelvic tilts and modified head rolls will help tighten your muscles.

Another thing you can try is getting up from your desk every once in a while to walk around and stretch. This will help improve blood flow throughout your body and make you feel better.

When I was pregnant with each of my children, I suffered from severe Charlie horses. Charlie horses are also known as muscle cramps or spasms.

Often a cramp occurred out of nowhere and in the middle of the night. It would hit suddenly and intensify as the calf of my leg began to form a solid rock appearance. My muscles continued to tighten as I screamed out in agony. It was then that my husband would awake to rub the pain out. What caused this type of behavior in my body? And how could I prevent it from happening again?

Muscle cramps seem to come from many different circumstances, such as low calcium or potassium in the blood. Muscle cramps can also appear when there aren’t enough fluids in the body, which causes dehydration and involuntary muscle contractions. Lack of circulation, exercising without warming up first, strenuous exercise without cooling down, being pregnant, wearing the wrong shoes on hilly or long walks, and yes, even overexertion of your body over a long period of time can cause parts of your body to encounter muscle spasms.

But muscle cramps do not have to take over your life. There are preventative measures that can help reduce, if not get rid of, muscle cramps altogether. Preventative measures such as regular exercise, stretching before exercising, cooling down after exercising and drinking eight glasses of water a day.

That’s not all. Taking calcium or potassium supplements when pregnant, or when your body is lacking the proper amount, can also help keep those Charlie horses away. It also has been proven that eating vegetables and fruits high in calcium and potassium (such as bananas and orange juice) can cut down on the number of spasms your body has to endure.

So while you are getting your body in shape with preventative measures, what can be done with the cramps you are currently experiencing? When a muscle cramp seems to have taken over a part of your body, you can try rubbing the area to help warm up the muscle, thus causing the cramp to lessen. If that doesn’t work, try placing a warm heating pad on the cramped area or soaking in a warm bath. In more severe cases, doctors can prescribe muscle relaxants to help with the cramping.
